Modulo Articulador de la Sabana (M.A.S.)

ARCHITECTURE BIENNALE OF COSTA RICA 2020

LOCATION: Sabana, San José

YEAR:  2020 | STATUS: Schematic Design

Located on the southwest side of La Sabana Lake is the “rebalse,” a rudimentary system that controls the lake’s water levels. Currently, it functions as a simple north-south crossing without any other purpose. The general state of abandonment in the area creates a sense of insecurity.

M.A.S. takes advantage of the privileged location of the “rebalse” and the diversity of surrounding landscapes to create an element that not only maintains the north-south crossing but also opens the project to the east and west. M.A.S. becomes a link between the lake and the “rebalse,” giving them a new purpose and revitalizing the entire area.

The project’s volumetrics expand the north-south crossing while simultaneously preserving the original use of the “rebalse.” It integrates various dimensions, such as culture, sports, education, and gastronomy, each with its own development, all unified under a single language.

In summary, M.A.S. transforms the “rebalse” into a multifunctional and attractive space, reactivating the area and providing opportunities for cultural, sports, educational, and gastronomic activities. This project revitalizes the area, turning it into a dynamic and secure meeting point for residents and visitors.
